- On March 23, 2015
The Sri Lanka China Business Council (SLCHBC) will be facilitating a series of meetings and networking events for five business delegations arriving in Colombo from The People’s Republic of China at the end of this month. The events will be held on the 24th, 26th, 27th and 30th of March, with the last delegation hosted on the 1st of April. Participation by local businesses and entrepreneurs is encouraged, and if interested, should contact the SLCHBC for more details on venues and timing.
The visiting delegations are from various Chinese Provinces, namely Shenyang, Shandong, Liaoning and Yunnan, as well as one representing the major cities of China led by the Hong Kong Culture and Economy Promotion Association for International Cities. The main emphasis of these discussions is not only on strengthening the bilateral trade and cooperative ties between Sri Lanka and China, but on the cultivation of relationships with the individual provinces and Sri Lankan businesses.
The first delegation, arriving on the 24th of March, will be led by the Hong Kong Culture and Economy Promotion Association for International cities, and will consist of 6 representatives from Beijing, Shenzhen, Fujian, Ningxia and Zhejiang. They are scheduled to meet with members of the SLCHBC executive committee, and are also keen to meet representatives from the Sri Lanka Exports Development Board (EDB) and the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI).
The delegation from the Shenyang Province will follow this, with an event that will be facilitated by the SLCHBC on the 26th of March. The main purpose of this visit is to consolidate on the strong existing bilateral ties, while exploring collaborative potential in various fields between Shenyang and Sri Lanka. This will culminate in the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding, followed by individual business meetings and forums.
They have expressed an interest in meeting local companies in numerous business areas, particularly in the automobile, aluminium, curtains and furniture industries, as well as travel agencies and imports and exports. Shenyang, being the capital and largest city of Liaoning Province, represents an essential opportunity for Sri Lanka to establish a rapport with one of the top industrial centres in China. The main focus of Shenyang has been on heavy industry, particularly aerospace, heavy equipment and defence, as well as a recent venture into software and automotive manufacturing.
There will be representatives in this delegation from the Shenyang Municipal Government, International Trade Company of Brilliance Auto, Liaoning Qiangfeng Aluminium Industry Engineering Co., Ltd, Shenyang International Economic & Technical Cooperation Ltd., Zhong Xing Shenyang Commercial Building Group and Shenyang Youth International Travel Agency.
On the 27th of March, there will be a meeting held with Department of Commerce of Shandong Province, in order to discuss project contracts and investment. This will be a smaller scale event, as there is no participation by local businesses, but it is equally significant, as the meeting will involve the Executive Committee of the SLCHBC, BOI and EDB.
Following this, there will be an event held on the 30th of March for a delegation visiting from the Liaoning Province. As the main focus of the visit is on fortifying economic cooperation and trade between Liaoning and Sri Lanka, there will be a strategic Memorandum of Understanding signed between both parties. Liaoning, located in the northeast of China in a region referred to as ‘The Golden Triangle’, is an important base for equipment and machinery manufacturing, along with electronics, telecommunications, petrochemicals and mining. The delegation will consist of four representatives from the Liaoning Provincial Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
The final delegation will be hosted at a meeting on the 1st of April. This delegation from the Yunnan Province is large and varied, with representation from a variety of companies such as Yunnan Provincial General Chamber of Commerce (YPGCC), Yunnan Overseas Friendship Association, Nanfang Education Investment Group, Qujing Yu’an Construction Engineering Group Co. Ltd. and Agricultural Materials Chamber of Commerce in Yuxi City.
Yunnan Province is located in the far Southwest of China, and is sustained by four pillar industries: tobacco, agriculture/biology, mining and tourism. There is also a developing manufacturing industry, with iron/steel production and commercial vehicle manufacture being on the rise. This delegation will also sign a Memorandum of understanding, and aims to focus on how to strengthen the cooperation of entrepreneurs from both parties.
