Delegation headed by President Maithripala to visit China
- On March 6, 2015
Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena is set to embark on his inaugural visit to China on March 26th 2015. This will be the President’s second official overseas trip since his election in January 2015. A delegation consisting of top officials, including government representatives as well as senior members of the Sri Lanka-China Business Council (SLCHBC), will accompany Mr. Sirisena on the trip.
President Sirisena is scheduled to meet and hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Chinese officials. The central focus will be on solidifying bilateral cooperation with China in all sectors and signing key agreements to further consolidate the strong mutual relationship between the two countries. In his visit to China in February, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera laid the foundation for this visit, reiterating the desire of the new Sri Lankan government to strengthen Sri Lanka-Sino ties.
Mr. Sirisena will attend the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference held on Hainan Island from March 26-29. The BFA, the most prestigious forum for leaders in government, business and academia in Asia, is committed to promoting economic integration while assisting countries in the region in reaching their individual development goals. The main theme of the forum this year is “Asia’s New Future: Towards a Community of Common Destiny”, and it will be inaugurated by the Chinese President, Mr. Xi Jinping.
During this State Visit, there will also be a Business Forum held in Beijing, organized by the Sri Lankan Embassy in China. President Sirisena is expected to address the Forum, which underlines the significance of the occasion. This will be an important platform for strengthening business connections between the two countries, as several high-level Chinese investors and entrepreneurs will attend the Forum. Accordingly, Senior members from the SLCHBC will be given a chance to educate and inform the Chinese public about both existing and upcoming trade and investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.
